Sundaes on Thursdays 2018

5/11/2018

We are gearing up for another summer of fun, music, and of course ice cream!  McFarland UCC has hosted Sundaes on Thursdays for over 20 years, giving all proceeds to local nonprofits: the Mcfarland Food Pantry, MHS Black Student Union, the McFarland Community Garden, and many more!

Before this summer kicks off, we want to say "thank you!" to all the musicians, servers, community partners, Schoep's, Culver's, and McFarland neighbors who have come out to enjoy a sweet treat over the years.  Because of you, Sundaes on Thursdays would not be possible.

So, here's to another summer of "more than just ice cream!"  See you June 21, 2018!

One Great Hour of Sharing Offering

3/2/2018

Picture
Every year covenant members and friends of our church freely contribute to One Great Hour of Sharing, an annual offering supported by many Christian denominations.  A gift to One Great Hour of Sharing enables the church to share God's love with our neighbors-in-need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, provide food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed. Envelopes are available at the back of the sanctuary, or gifts may be sent to MUCC.  If online giving is easiest for you, check out our Donations page.  Simply write OGHS in the "UCC special offerings" memo line.

Shrove Tuesday - Mardi Gras!

More Details from Pastor Mike:

"The season of Lent is a six-week winter/spring observance that prepares us for Easter. Lent 2018 begins with Ash Wednesday on February 14, and concludes with Easter Sunday on April 1. I think this quite amusing: we begin a journey that starts on Valentine's Day and ends on April Fool's Day! Of course both observances have biblical reference: Jesus said "love one another" and Paul said "we are fools for Christ!"

The term "Lent" comes from a word that means "lengthen" and refers to the lengthening of days as we move from winter towards spring. For the church, Lent was a time to join in spiritual practices of study, fasting, and penitence. Lent was a time for believers to learn more about their faith, plumb the depths of their hearts, face the darkness of sin and death, and come out on the other end with a glorious celebration of Easter Resurrection.

The six-week time period, not counting Sundays, equals 40 days, referring to the 40 days Jesus spent in the Judean wilderness following his baptism at age 30, and prefacing the start of his ministry. Matthew and Luke record that the devil came to him in the wilderness and tempted him with three challenges, one economic, one political, and one about matters of life and death. These challenges we understand in our own lives.

When Jesus was baptized by John, he heard a message that he would continue: "repent!" That word in Hebrew means, "turn around!" Turn your life away from that which is meaningless and a waste of life energy, and get on the way to God. The Greek word for "repent" meant "renew your mind!" and get out of the traps of dusty, calcified thoughts, and limber up: renew, reframe, reset your thoughts to God and God's kingdom!

I was thinking that since Ash Wednesday falls on Valentine's Day this year, instead of coming to a church service, let's spend time with our loved ones that evening and do something special and loving with them. Then, to honor the start of Lent, we could gather as a church on the evening before Valentine's Day: "Fat Tuesday" (Mardi Gras in French), or "Shrove Tuesday" (a time of preparation for Lenten self-examination) and eat desserts together and talk about Lent 2018 and how the season is a good time to deepen our faith and renew our spirits."

Messy Church To-Go

11/14/2017

Picture
This past Sunday, November 12, we tried a new spin on our usual monthly Messy Church.  Because of church building construction an easy to carry "to-go" bag was offered with all the elements of Messy Church: scripture readings, prayer cards, songs, crafts, and even dinner!

The theme this month was THANKFULNESS and once finished with all the activities, participants were encouraged to take their empty Messy Church To-Go bag and fill it with nonperishable items for the McFarland Food Pantry.  Thank you!

Check out what a couple families posted on social media about their experience:

Wow! An unprepared Momma and Dad after a long weekend who had not yet started dinner, when we were blessed with Messy church to go right to our doorstep. Now dinner's in the oven and fun family activities are going on. #blessedtobeablessing #mcfarlanducc #messychurch #churchfamily

Take home Messy Church = success! Thank you for putting this together.

Sewing Mission

10/23/2017

Picture
Saturday, November 11
9am - 3pm at McFarland UCC
A gathering of sewing friends – new and old …
Calling all who may be interested in a day for sewing.  If you are not a sewing person, and want to be, join us!  We will make some simple projects (drawstring bags, origami sewn bags, and runaround bags) to share at the McFarland HS Food Pantry and the McFarland Village Food Pantry. If there is another service project you are sewing for, feel free to bring it along. If there is another resource for the bags we'll be making, you are welcome to make bags for another organization. We will have some fabric and patterns available, but you are more than welcome to bring patterns you like, and fabric that’s been waiting to be used.

After you finish a bag or two, we support you in using the sewing time for YOU. Sewists sew, because it's good for our souls – and we are often trying to finish up projects to give in our own circles of loved ones.
Lunch on us! Click HERE to RSVP
