Sunday Sermons
5-14-23 Sermon: (Mother's Day) "Naomi, The Black Madonna, & Sarah's Song"
This message begins with a retelling of the basic story of the book of Ruth. I focus though on Ruth's mother-in-law Naomi, who experienced the death of her husband and two sons. She was a mother who experienced tremendous grief. I then introduce a theological strand called "The Black Madonna," and draw from insights of Andrew Harvey who states that the Black Madonna is about The Mother who was "blackened" by pain and suffering. The message ends with me playing a song about a teenage young woman who had a "maternal" experience of love with an orphan child in Haiti. The audio balance on this song between vocal and guitar is not good, so if you'd prefer to listen to the studio recording of that song, select this link and you'll be taken to it. "Sarah's Song" is track #13 on the album "J-Walking: Songs For Justice Walkers."
