McFarland UCC is excited to be participating in an expansion of the Lions’ annual school supply drive. During the summer, we're asking folks to be “backpack buddies” and donate supplies that kids will need next school year.
Currently, 20-percent of McFarland schoolchildren qualify for free lunch programs because they come from low income families. This means many of them are also not able to buy their own school supplies.
At a recent service, the congregation was shown some items that modern day students need in the classroom. They don’t just include pencils, pens and loose-leaf paper! Since dry erase boards have replaced blackboards and chalk in many classrooms, students must bring their own dry erase markers to work on classroom assignments. Children also must bring sanitary wipes to clean computer keyboards and other classroom work areas, so they are free of grime and potential cold and flu viruses.
The collection of school materials—including backpacks—will continue all summer. There's also a friendly competition going on within the congregation. You can find out more in the fellowship area after worship.
