One Great Hour of Sharing - 2016 Offering

4/4/2016

Walk the Extra Mile...

Picture
The One Great Hour of Sharing offering this year focuses on refugees and displaced persons.  There is no better biblical story to accompany this work than that of Ruth and Naomi.

Brief yet profound, in the passage of Ruth we encounter the resilience of two women who have been widowed, as well as ravaged by the natural disaster of famine.  These ecological and socio-political events rendered Naomi and Ruth the most vulnerable in their society.  Just like refugees today, Ruth and Naomi did not have the privilege of choosing to stay in their homes, but were forced to relocate.  Yet when the system failed them, Ruth chose solidarity with Naomi over despair and accompanies her to pursue a livelihood for both of them.

"Ruth's promise to Naomi stands as a challenge for Christians today to walk with refugees
as they build new homes in strange lands."

Through the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, we, as the body of Christ, have opportunity and power to help those who are living in despair as refugees.  If refugees had the choice to return home, many would not have a place to return because their home most likely has been destroyed - either burned, severely damaged, or still an unsafe place to live.

This year as you consider your gift to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, for one moment, think of what it would be like to not have a place to call home, and then make your very best gift.  Let us make Ruth's promise our own.  Let us live out the call of solidarity with all people, especially those displaced by disaster, war and famine.

Thank you!

Capital Campaign

3/21/2016

Picture
Sunday, April 3 at 11:15 am, you are invited to a special lunch where we will provide an update about MUCC's capital campaign - Building for God's Future.

For almost two years, the church’s leaders have been studying building needs and ministry possibilities.  In concept meetings, we developed a list of values and priorities.

At the 2016 Annual Meeting, the church approved a fundraising campaign.  Based on campaign results, we will work with an architect to develop a proposal that makes best use of pledged funds.
Picture
Welcoming  is at the core of being ‘A Church With Heart’ – we want to convey a sense of hospitality and compassion.  The building exterior, entries and spaces within should be inviting and approachable, warm, and light.

Visionary
We want to go beyond ‘new and improved’ to look to the future.   How can we convey the new, bold spirit in this place?  What big ideas will equip us for the next stage in our ministry?  What technology shifts do we need to consider?

Faith-Filled   We want our facilities and our ministry to be faith-filled.  We hope for an enriching environment that helps the congregation and the community grow in faith.

Community-Building   Our ministry is for the congregation and for the community. We hope to build community within the church and with our neighbors.  The project should help us reach out and reach in, in ways that are fully inclusive.  We want to create a place for conversations.

Functional   Whatever we create should be versatile and flexible. We are an informal congregation.  This implies special attention to creating inviting spaces to be at ease, materials that are child-friendly and mess-friendly, and adequate, well-organized
storage.

With multiple generations at the core of our ministry, we need an environment that is both accessible and safe.  We want spaces that are well-lit, acoustically and visually pleasing, but also designed to be used.

The guiding values for the project are also who we are as a church.
Invest in our shared ministry!

You can choose the best way for you to give!
Funds can be pledged over up to a 5 year timeframe.

Christmas Card Project

1/12/2016

Thank you, Christmas Card Project!
Sharing holiday cheer, love and peace.

This Christmas, Christa Fisher, the interim chaplain for the Dane County Jail, inspired us to send Christmas Cards to those in prison.   She writes...
"Needless to say, I was overwhelmed by your generosity! And the men and women were touched by your kindness. As I passed out supplies, I felt a bit like St Nicholas, filling stockings with Christmas cheer.

Christmas in jail can be an exceptionally lonely time. Many people feel forgotten and disposable around the holidays. Despite the reality of their situations, they were able to experience a bit of the joy and peace which defines Christmas. As I passed out the cards, the men were excited but confused. 'Is this from you?' and 'Do you want me to give this to someone else?' were the questions I most often heard. 'It’s for you,'  I would say. 'Someone whom you don’t know wrote it for you.'  They would look at me curiously, to which I would reply, 'You are not forgotten. There are hundreds of people in our community who are thinking of you, praying for you and working to make this a more just system. This card is from them. Merry Christmas.' "
Through MUCC and other organizations' support the jail ministry received:
1670 Christmas Cards!
75 Scarves
98 Winter Coats
100 stamps or stamped envelopes
122 Pairs of Gloves
150 Hats
200 pairs of socks
250 pencils
Hundreds of books
5 boxes of tissue
9 decks of cards
10 sketch pads
15 packs of colored pencils
16 pairs of reading glasses
18 sets of thermals
30 calendars
53 pairs of underwear
63 composition books
65 undershirts

Every year through the Giving Tree program, Christmas gifts are provided for families who are served by the McFarland Food Pantry.  MUCC is once again collecting pantry items, gifts and financial donations for those in need this holiday season.  Tags containing details of household gifts or child gift suggestions are located in the Fellowship Hall.  Gifts need to be returned to the church by Sunday, December 13.  Thank you for helping make someone’s Christmas more special!

Special Needs Ministry Team Launched

3/28/2015

Introducing the MUCC Special Needs Ministry Team!

Several members recently proposed a new ministry team.  Their goal is to provide resources for children with visible and invisible special needs to participate in church activities successfully, and to educate the congregation about special needs differences.  Thank you to Trish Bailey, Lisa Fernan, Amy Hanneman, and Megan Marten, for your leadership in bringing these issues forward.  Here's a word from the team:
  • If you or someone you know is struggling with a particular parenting issue please know that you may come to us for support at any time (whether you have a child with special needs or are just having a difficult time.)  If you can't catch up with us at church (or don't know us), call/email the church office and ask for our contact information.
  • We are happy to announce: the inclusion of new sensory tools to our sanctuary. These will be introduced to the kids at a special Messy Church taking place on April 12.
  • Also, we will be talking more about our ministry at Accessibility Sunday, May 3rd.

  - Trish, Lisa, Amy & Megan
Coming soon…
Coffee break for parents. This will be likely held once per month at MUCC with childcare available. This will offer parents a forum to share, ask questions, and learn from others. Some months we will have a speaker from the community join us to share about a particular topic of interest.  Stay tuned for details.  Let us know if you're interested and we'll put you on our list.

Blessing Blankets for DAIS

1/6/2015

On January 4, 2015, our worship focus was on the Slaughter of the Innocents and the Holy Family's flight to Egypt as found in Matthew 2:13-23.   We reflected on the ways in which the vulnerable are still threatened by those in power.  During our Faithful Conversation, we took time to bless fleece blankets that were tied by our youth at their last church overnight.  The blankets will be delivered to Domestic Abuse Intervention Services to give comfort to those fleeing domestic violence.  Our prayers will be with those we may never have the chance to meet.

Blessing fleece blankets for DAIS (Domestic Abuse Intervention Services) in worship on 1/4/15. Blankets tied by our youth group!

December Events

12/18/2014

McFarland UCC has a December calendar of events that's all about building relationships inside and outside the building.

Christmas Caroling

Some church members tuned up their voices and sang Christmas carols to shut-ins Dec. 13.  Tom Ludwig said the shut-ins are long-time members of MUCC located in a number of locations in the Madison area, including Monona, Fitchburg and Stoughton.  Many of them are not able to attend services due to chronic health conditions.

“I think being a church with heart means much more than what goes on inside the walls,” he said.  “These people have had a long-time connection, and it’s important to maintain those connections by reaching out to them when they can’t come and be inside our walls with us.”
